Anthony Ty

Anthony Ty is 22 years old and has been playing the piano since he was 5. Growing up, his biggest influence on the piano did not actually stem from classical music, but from watching YouTubers and Twitch music streamers play complicated piano arrangements of music from his favorite video games and movies. This served as a gateway to starting his classical piano training in high school and loved it ever since. Some of Anthony’s favorite composers to play now include Chopin, Beethoven, Brahms, and Joe Hisaishi. It has now become his turn to inspire others to play the piano through live-streaming weekly on Twitch, accumulating thousands of followers and over 1 million total views on his channel. His most recent live performances include recitals at DePaul University and Pianoforte Studios.

Besides inspiring through performance, Ty developed a passion for teaching. His main philosophy comes from his high school band director, who thought learning music was not only about being good at your instrument and making beautiful sounds but learning how to be the best person you could be. At the end of high school, Ty served as a teacher’s assistant for a group piano class and became the pianist/music director for the Fil-Am Choir of St. Peter’s in Skokie. This start of his teaching career led him to teach piano students at Solo Classic Music School in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, Des Plaines School of Music, Sato Music Studios in La Grange, Illinois, and now runs a small studio of his own. Other teaching experiences include taking several piano pedagogy courses at DePaul under Dr. Susanne Baker, shadowing piano teachers of the DePaul Community Music Division, as well as attending the National Conference of Keyboard Pedagogy 2021.

Ty received a Bachelor’s of Music degree in piano performance at DePaul University studying under George Vatchnadze. His piano pedagogy mentors include Jennifer Cohen, Suzanne Baker, and Maria Irabagon.

His next projects include an internship with the Frances Clark Center, completing the MTNA National Teacher’s Certification, and getting involved with the Northshore Music Teachers Association.

Besides playing the piano, he likes to spend his time running, cooking, playing table tennis, and rock climbing.
